When training for a big event that is a question we all need to ask ourselves.
We need to remember that our ego is not the important thing. The welfare of our horse’s emotional and physical state is.
You see, they don’t understand why you are pushing them so hard. They don’t understand why they have to stop hard, lope circles or spin a hole in the ground.
What they do understand is our intent and our emotions. They understand our kindness and they understand when we know they are struggling or getting tired. They understand when we notice how hard they are trying and how we reward them for that try. They understand when we schedule massages and the chiropractor to try and keep them feeling their best during training.
We need to remember what we take out, we need to put back tenfold.
Your horse should be your friend. Winning should never cost you a friendship.
